Taishan Medical University

 
 

 

Taishan Medical University began as the Loude Branch of Shandong Medical University. It became an independent school in 1974 upon the approval of the State Council and Shandong Provincial Government. The college moved from Loude to Taian in 1980. Its name was then changed in 1981 to Taishan Medical University. In 1998 it passed the Undergraduate Teaching Standard Evaluation from the State Ministry of Education. With the approval of the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council the university became authorized to grant general master degrees in 1998 and continuous education master degrees in 2004. The university covers an area of 200 hectares with a construction area of 670,000 square meters and students have access to 1,280,000 books, 544,800 e-books, 1417 Chinese and English periodicals, and 12 Chinese and English article databases.

The total number of students now exceeds 20,082 full-time students; 350 postgraduates and 340 international students. 1,439 staff members serve them. There are 983 full-time teachers.

The university has 14 departments and 28 undergraduate majors including medicine, engineering, literature, science, management, and pedagogy. There are 5 provincial key subjects, 1 provincial key Laboratories Intensive Project, 16 master degree specialties. The university is continuously strengthening the wide range of medical education and other subjects. It has continuously offered new programs, gradually established multiple majors courses with medical science as its main body with the combination of medicine and engineering.

Taishan Medical University lies at the foot of the world-famous Mount Taishan. According to historical record, Mountain Tai became a sacred place frequented by emperors to offer sacrifices and meditate in Zhou Dynasty over 1,000B.C. Since that time, a total of 72 emperors have been recorded as visiting it. Scholars and poets also came to gain their inspirations, write poetry and essays, paint and take pictures. Through this process, the sacred Mount Taishan has been the object of imperial pilgrimage for nearly two thousands years, and the artistic masterpieces contained within it are in perfect harmony with the natural landscape. It has always been a source of inspiration to Chinese artists and scholars and symbolizes ancient Chinese civilizations and beliefs.
