Mount Taishan, with a scenic area of 426 square kilometers and an elevation of 1,545 meters, is located in the middle of Shandong Province. As one of the cradles of China's ancient culture along the Yellow River, Mount Taishan is called DaiZong (the paramount mountain) and DongYue (the Eastern Mountain, means the first of the Five Sacred Mountains). It was listed as World Cultural and Natural Heritage site in 1987 and Global Geopark in 2006, by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). For example, there are masterpieces of ancient constructions as Dai Temple, the South gate to Heaven, BiXia temple; precious stone inscriptions of past dynasties as Qin dynasty stone inscriptions, inscriptions rocks of the Diamond Sutra, cliffs with inscriptions of Tang dynasty; ancient trees like pine trees of Qin Dynasty, cypress of Han Dynasty (about 1800 years ago), locust tree of Tang Dynasty (about 1200 years ago).

Experts of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO said, "Mount Taishan uniquely unites nature and culture together, and this means China has contributed a special heritage to the world."

Mount Taishan has abundant geological remains, especially famous for Precambrian geological evolution, geotectonic movement and paleontological fossils, etc. There are also peculiar geologic structures as Komatiite, barrel-shaped structure allgovite and three grand fracture layers. Especially Komatiite is now widely accepted as the only Archean ultrabasic extrusive rock containing spinifex texture in China. Mount Taishan is a natural geological museum with gigantic geological value, and the perfect combination of geological heritage and cultural sites.
