Dai Temple

Dai Temple is located in the south of Mount Taishan which is the place where the ancient emperors paid homage to Mount Taishan and the symbol of the Chinese feudalism. It was included in the world cultural and natural heritage list in 1987 and proclaimed as the national important cultural relic protection unit in 1988.

The temple was constructed during the Qin (211BC~206BC) and Han (206BC~220AD) Dynasties, extended twice respectively in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and renovated many times in the Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. Most of the present attractions inside the temple were left from the Han Dynasty. Known as one of the three foremost ancient palatial halls in China, the Palace of Heavenly Blessing was built with double-edged eaves that is a symbol of highest rank in ancient building styles. A mural of Song Dynasty inside the hall, God of Mount Taishan Making the Journey, is the rare cultural relic. Another attraction is the Bronze Pavilion. Lying in the northeast corner of the temple, the pavilion is made of bronze castings. The intricate and sound workmanship provides it with high value, making it one of the famous bronze pavilions in China.

Inside the temple, there are numerous over 160 steles, including the Li Si stele of Qin Dynasty which is the earliest stele in the Mount Taishan Scenic Area, the Heng Fang Stele and Zhang Qian stele which are both noted for lishu style (an ancient style of calligraghy current in the Han Dynasty). Besides, numerous ancient trees grows exuberantly in the courtyard. The five most famous cypresses were planted by Emperor Han Wudi of the Han Dynasty himself and have lived for 2,000 years. In the rear of the temple, there is a bonsai garden. Different kinds of bonsais are offered for tourists to appreciate.
