Passing through the arch of South Heavenly Gate, taking two flights of stairs and turning right to the east, there is Heavenly Street. A stone memorial archway is erected at the beginning of the street which is about 1,000 meters long.
In the ancient times, local residents built up shops, restaurants and hotels along the street, selling commodities, and providing board and lodging for climbers. In order to let the climbers identify different shops at a glance, shopkeepers hung one of their commodities under eaves as signs for their shops, that became an interesting character of Heavenly Street over a long period of time. Now, the former shabby houses have been replaced by new antique buildings, and shops provide more varieties of commodities and more considerate services, but the ancient custom that hangs different commodities as signs for different shops at the door still continues.
There is Elephant Trunk Peak, White Cloud Cave and Blue Cloud Cave at the south of Heavenly Street. Memorial Archway Where Confucius Saw Wu is on the north side of the street. It is said that this is the place where Confucius and his student Yan Yuan looked over the state of Wu. And Confucius Temple is located just to the north of the archway.
