Puzhao Monastery

Puzhao Monastery (Illumining Monastery)is located at the end of Puzhao Monastery Road. It is the best-protected Buddhist temple on Mount Taishan. According to researchers, Puzhao Monastery was built in the Tang or Song Dynasty. In the years of Dading of the Jin Dynasty, the temple was rebuilt by an imperial order and entitled Puzhao Monastery. It was usually called Temple of Six Dynasties, because it is said that the pine tree still alive in the temple has grown during Six Dynasties. Under the pine tree is Shaiyue Pavilion whose name comes from that the moon light passes through interstices between pine needles, as if it passes through the filter of a sieve. In the pavilion, there is a stone table which emits five different voices when its four corners and the center were knocked respectively. Thus it is named Wuyin Stone. Puzhao Monastery is 82 meters long from north to south, and 75 meters wide from east to west. Two well-known monks once lived here, one was Mankong from Gaoli (the present Korea) in the years of Yongle of Ming Dynasty. He had made contributions to the culture exchanges between China and Korea. The other was an eminent monk named Yuan Yu. He was also a famous poet.
