Qi Great Wall Scenic Area

2014/11/20

The Qi Great Wall, one of the four oldest great walls in China, has a history of more than 2,400 years. It winds its way for 618.9 kilometers across the center of Shandong province.  It was a military defense line built by the state of Qi during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. The construction of the great wall took more than 400 years to complete. Qi Great Wall is even 300 years old than the Qin Great Wall, and is referred to as the “father of the Chinese great walls”. The section in Xiagang of Tai’an is the part that is best preserved of the wall. It is a valuable heritage of our national culture and a witness of the long history of China.

The western part of the wall starts from Dongzhang village between Xiaolipu and Guanglixiang of Changqing County. It goes along the right bank of the Yellow River and into the Taishan mountain range. It goes past Feicheng, Tai’an, Licheng, Laiwu and reaches Zhangqiu. The eastern part of the wall starts from Lushan Mountain between Boshan and Yiyuan. It goes for 500 kilometers past Anqiu, Juxian, Wulian and Zhucheng to the sea at Yujiahe Village of Jiaonan County. The walls are 6 to 10 meters wide and 2 to 11 meters tall. The Qi Great Wall in the area of Mt. Tai consists of Changqing section, Feiceng section, Tai’an section and Laiwu section.

The Tai’an section of the Qi Great Wall is 82 kilometers long, of which the eastern part is the best preserved, which runs for 34 kilometers from Dajinkou to Gushan village of Xiagang. It was built with stones stuffed with rammed earth. This area, with an average elevation of 800 meters, is featured by its natural beauty. It has a forest coverage of 90%, and therefore the air is fresh. The area has its attractions at all seasons. It is a natural botanical garden with numerous kinds of trees, grass, flowers and herbs. There is a fishing area where tourists can cook with what they have fished. Besides, tourists can also pick nuts and fruits in the scenic area, including chestnuts, walnuts, hawthorns and parsimonies. In winter the area is also charming especially after the hills are covered with snow. What is special is that there is a grassland at an elevation of 960 meters on the top of the mountain. In the grassland there is a stone which marks the boundaries of Tai’an, Jinan and Laiwu. The grassland makes a harmonious scene with cows and sheep grazing on it.

Reasons for recommendation: The scenic area, with an area of 6 square kilometers, lies at the boundaries of Jinan, Tai’an and Laiwu. Inside the area there are such scenic spots as the Qi Great Wall, mountain top grassland and pine forest.
